Germany Trade Fairs — Which City, and What to Know Before You Go

Germany hosts more of the world's leading trade fairs than any other country. Roughly two-thirds of the global number-one events in their sectors take place here, which means that for many industries the question is not whether to attend a German fair but which city you will be flying into.

These 120 events are spread over 22 venues, and the strongest sectors are Manufacturing & Engineering, Business Services & Professional and Home & Interior.

This guide compares the eight German cities in our listings — Munich, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Berlin, Hannover and Nuremberg — on the things that actually affect a business trip.

The cities at a glance

CityHall spaceAirport → fair
Frankfurt~400,000 m², 12 halls~15 min
Hannover~390,000 m², 24 halls~30 min
Cologne~284,000 m², 11 halls~20 min (CGN)
Düsseldorf~262,000 m², 18 halls~10 min (3 km)
Munich~200,000 m², 18 halls~60 min (42 km)
Berlin~190,000 m², 26 halls~60 min
Nuremberg~180,000 m², 16 halls~25 min
Hamburg~87,000 m², 11 halls~25 min

Two patterns are worth drawing out. The largest grounds are not the easiest to reach — Hannover is vast but its airport transfer is average, while Düsseldorf is mid-sized with the shortest transfer in the country. And Munich and Berlin, both major cities, have the worst airport access of the eight, because their fairgrounds and airports sit on opposite sides of large metropolitan areas.

Getting there: the biggest practical difference

Frankfurt is the most accessible exhibition centre in Europe. The airport is one of the continent's largest hubs and sits about fifteen minutes from the grounds; the main railway station is a few hundred metres away, walkable with light luggage. For a two-day trip from outside Europe, nothing here beats it.

Düsseldorf comes a close second for a different reason: the airport is roughly three kilometres from the exhibition centre. The airport is smaller than Frankfurt's, so long-haul options are fewer — but if there is a direct flight, door-to-door time is excellent.

Hamburg has the best in-city rail access of the eight. Four separate stations serve different entrances, one of them an ICE long-distance stop, and the airport is only 8–10 km away.

Nuremberg and Cologne both offer direct, simple connections — Nuremberg has its own U-Bahn station ten minutes from the centre, Cologne has its own rail station three minutes from the South Entrance.

Hannover is well served by tram lines 8 and 18 from the main station, and during major fairs long-distance ICE trains stop at the fairground's own station.

Munich and Berlin are the outliers. Munich's airport is 42 km from the fairground; Berlin's BER sits southeast while the Messe is in the west, roughly an hour apart. Both have excellent local rail once you are in the city — but budget more time for the arrival day.

Does your ticket include public transport?

This is the detail most visitors get wrong, and the rules genuinely differ from city to city.

CityIncluded?What to know
CologneUsually yesTickets with the VRS symbol cover bus, S-Bahn, U-Bahn and regional trains. ICE and IC excluded.
FrankfurtUsually yesTickets with the RMV symbol are valid in the RMV area. Vouchers and complimentary tickets excluded.
HamburgSometimesSome fairs include an HVV ticket (INTERNORGA does). Others don't.
MunichDepends on ticket typePrint-at-home tickets specifically do not include transport.
BerlinVaries by eventFair and centre are both in zone AB; BER airport is zone C.
NurembergVaries by eventVGN network. The U1 ride is short either way.
HannoverNoAdmission tickets and exhibitor passes are not transport tickets. Deutschlandticket is valid if you hold one.
DüsseldorfCheck your eventTerms are set per fair rather than city-wide.

In every case the terms sit on the individual event's website rather than the city's. Check the fair you are attending rather than assuming the city rule applies to you — and note that Hannover works the opposite way to Cologne and Frankfurt, which catches out people who travel between them.

Which city for which industry

CityLeading sectors
FrankfurtPublishing, automotive aftermarket, consumer goods, lighting & building technology, process industries, textiles
DüsseldorfMedical technology, printing, plastics & rubber, packaging, retail technology, wine
CologneFood & beverage, video games, furniture & interiors, dentistry, digital marketing, fitness
MunichConstruction machinery, building materials, electronics, environmental technology, commercial property, logistics
HannoverIndustrial technology, agricultural machinery, commercial vehicles, metalworking, woodworking, flooring
BerlinTravel & tourism, consumer electronics, rail technology, fresh produce, agriculture, aviation
HamburgMaritime & shipping, wind energy, hospitality & catering, aircraft interiors
NurembergToys, organic food, embedded systems, pet supplies, packaging, refrigeration, automation

The pattern here is not random. Hamburg is a port, so its fairs are maritime. Hannover was rebuilt around heavy industry after 1947. Nuremberg has made toys for six hundred years. Where a German fair is held usually reflects what that city actually does.

Local calendar traps

Each city has periods when hotels fill regardless of whether a trade fair is running. These are worth checking against your dates.

CityWhenWhat happens
MunichMid-Sept → early OctOktoberfest. Rates rise city-wide; EXPO REAL in early October collides with it.
CologneFebruary (pre-Lent)Carnival. Normal business largely shuts down.
CologneAugustgamescom draws 300,000+ visitors and effectively sells the city out.
FrankfurtOctoberThe Book Fair brings the global publishing industry in at once.
NurembergLate Nov → DecemberChristkindlesmarkt, one of the world's best-known Christmas markets.
BerlinITB and IFA weeksThe one time Berlin's large hotel supply genuinely tightens.
HannoverHANNOVER MESSE, AgritechnicaDemand far exceeds the city's supply; visitors routinely stay in neighbouring towns.
DüsseldorfMEDICA, drupa, KSevere shortage; river cruise ships moor in the city as floating hotels.

Where accommodation is easiest — and hardest

Hotel supply varies more than the fairgrounds do, and it is worth knowing before you book flights.

Easiest: Berlin and Hamburg. Both are major tourist destinations with deep hotel supply, so an ordinary trade fair barely moves rates. Berlin in particular absorbs events that would overwhelm smaller cities.

Hardest: Hannover and Nuremberg. Both are mid-sized cities hosting world-scale fairs, and the arithmetic does not work in the visitor's favour. For the largest events, staying in a neighbouring town and commuting in is normal rather than a fallback — Hildesheim or Braunschweig for Hannover, Fürth or Erlangen for Nuremberg.

A useful pairing: Cologne and Düsseldorf are about 40 km apart, roughly half an hour by train. When one is full for a major fair, staying in the other is a practical solution rather than a compromise.

Entry requirements — what changed in 2026

These apply equally across all German cities.

Since April 2026, the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at Schengen external borders. Non-EU travellers now have fingerprints and a facial image recorded on first entry, replacing passport stamping. The rollout has produced significant queues at several airports — allow extra time at passport control, particularly on your first trip since it launched. Subsequent entries are quicker once your biometrics are registered.

ETIAS, the €20 pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationalities, has not launched yet. Its 2026 target was dropped and it is now expected in 2027. You do not need it currently, but verify before travelling — the date has moved repeatedly.

If you need a Schengen visa, apply well ahead. Appointment availability tightens around major fairs, and business visas may require an invitation from the organiser or your host company.

Practical notes that apply everywhere in Germany

Shops close on Sundays nationwide, and on public holidays — which vary by state. Bavaria (Munich and Nuremberg) observes more than most, so check the local calendar if your trip includes a free day.

Punctuality is taken seriously; meetings start on time. Cards are now accepted almost everywhere, though a small amount of cash remains useful in traditional pubs and taverns, and Berlin is slower on cards than Frankfurt or Munich.

Each city has its own drinking culture, and the distinctions matter locally more than visitors expect: Kölsch in Cologne, Altbier in Düsseldorf, the beer hall in Munich, Apfelwein rather than beer in Frankfurt. In Cologne and Düsseldorf, servers replace your glass automatically until you place your coaster on top of it.
