Cologne Trade Fairs & Business Events — Visitor Guide

Cologne's exhibition centre has an advantage that few major fairgrounds can claim: it sits inside the city, not outside it. Koelnmesse is in Deutz, directly across the Rhine from the old town, which means the walk from your hotel to your hall can genuinely be shorter than the walk between two halls.

Koelnmesse runs roughly 80 events a year and is the sector leader for several industries: Anuga for food and beverage, gamescom for video games, imm cologne for furniture, IDS for dentistry, DMEXCO for digital marketing, FIBO for fitness. For food and games in particular, Cologne is not one option among several — it is where the industry goes.

The venue

Koelnmesse offers around 284,000 m² of indoor hall space across eleven connected halls, plus about 100,000 m² outdoors. It is Germany's third-largest exhibition centre and among the world's ten biggest. Halls range from roughly 8,500 m² to over 22,000 m², and there are four entrances — North, East, South and West.

Because the halls are connected, moving between them is easier than at sprawling out-of-town sites. Still, check which entrance serves your hall: arriving at the wrong end of the complex costs real time during a large fair.

Getting there — and a saving worth knowing

Your trade fair ticket is usually a free public transport pass. Admission tickets displaying the VRS (Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg) symbol are valid for travel on buses, S-Bahn, U-Bahn and regional trains across the extended VRS network, for journeys to and from the exhibition centre. This is not widely advertised and many visitors buy tickets they did not need. The exception: ICE and IC long-distance trains are not included.

By train: Köln Messe/Deutz station is a three-minute walk from the South Entrance. It is one stop from Köln Hauptbahnhof, and many long-distance ICE services stop there directly — meaning you can arrive from Frankfurt, Brussels or Amsterdam and be at your hall within minutes.

By U-Bahn: Lines 3 and 4 stop at "Koelnmesse", directly at the East Entrance.

From Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN): The S19 runs to Köln Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes, every 20–30 minutes. The airport has its own station.

From Düsseldorf Airport (DUS): Around 40–55 minutes by train. DUS handles more long-haul routes than CGN, so this is often the practical arrival point for international visitors.

Where to stay

Cologne's central location is its strength and its problem: because the fairground is in the city, "close to the venue" and "close to the nightlife" are the same thing — and everyone wants both.

• Deutz (right at the fairground): Shortest possible commute, sensible for exhibitors. Quieter in the evening, but the old town is one stop across the river.
• Altstadt and around the Cathedral: Walking distance to the Hauptbahnhof, and a short hop to the fair. The natural choice for client dinners — the old town's brewery-pubs are where business gets done informally here.
• Neustadt-Süd and the Belgian Quarter: Slightly further out, better value, better restaurants than the tourist-facing old town.

A warning specific to Cologne: during gamescom the city effectively sells out. That fair alone draws over 300,000 visitors — an order of magnitude beyond a typical B2B trade fair — and rates across Cologne rise sharply for the week. If your event overlaps with it, book months ahead.

The Düsseldorf option: Cologne and Düsseldorf are about 40 km apart, roughly 25–40 minutes by train. When one city is full for a major fair, staying in the other is a genuinely practical fallback rather than a compromise.

Entry requirements — what changed in 2026

Since 10 April 2026, the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at all Schengen external borders. Non-EU travellers now have fingerprints and a facial image recorded on first entry, replacing passport stamping. The rollout has produced significant queues at several airports — allow extra time at passport control, especially on your first trip since it launched.

ETIAS, the pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationalities, has not launched yet. Its late-2026 target was dropped and it is now expected in 2027. You do not need it today, but check before travelling — the date has moved repeatedly.

If you need a Schengen visa, apply early; appointment availability tightens around major fairs.

Practical notes

Shops close on Sundays across Germany, and Cologne is no exception — plan purchases for Saturday.

The local beer is Kölsch, served in small 200 ml glasses that servers replace automatically until you place your coaster on top. Ordering an Altbier — the Düsseldorf beer — in a Cologne brewery is a running joke rather than a genuine offence, but expect comment.

One timing caution: Carnival (the week before Lent, typically February) largely shuts down normal business in Cologne. Hotels fill, and it is not a week to schedule meetings.
