Düsseldorf is one of the few cities where the exhibition centre, the airport and the city are all within a few kilometres of each other — and that single fact shapes every trip here.

Messe Düsseldorf runs some of the most significant trade fairs in the world in their respective industries: MEDICA for medical technology, drupa for printing, K for plastics and rubber, interpack for packaging, EuroShop for retail, ProWein for wine. For several of these, Düsseldorf is not one venue among many — it is the global edition that the industry travels to.

The venue

Messe Düsseldorf offers roughly 262,000 m² of indoor hall space across eighteen ground-level halls, plus 43,000 m² outdoors. Hall sizes range from about 3,900 m² to over 24,000 m², and clear heights reach 24 metres, which is why machinery fairs like K and drupa can be staged here at all.

The grounds sit directly on the Rhine, next to the CCD Congress Center. In a typical year the site handles around 27 trade fairs and close to a million visitors.

Two practical notes. First, the site is large — walking between distant halls takes real time, so check your hall number before you set off. Second, the halls have five entrances; the one named on your ticket is usually the closest to your target hall, and using a different one can add fifteen minutes.

Getting there

Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) is about 3 km from the exhibition grounds — one of the shortest airport-to-venue distances of any major European fair. Bus 896 connects the two directly.

From the city, the U-Bahn is the simplest option: U78 stops at Messe Nord/MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA, U79 at Messe Ost. Both run frequently and get busy during major fairs — travel slightly before or after the opening rush if you can. Bus 722 runs from the main station (Hauptbahnhof).

Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof is well connected to the wider Rhine-Ruhr region and to Cologne, Amsterdam and Frankfurt by ICE — a realistic option if you are combining several stops.

Where to stay

Düsseldorf has a genuine accommodation problem during its largest fairs, and Messe Düsseldorf itself acknowledges it: demand for affordable rooms has risen sharply in recent years. During MEDICA, drupa or K, rates across the city climb steeply and the best-located rooms are taken months in advance.

• Near the fairground (Stockum, Golzheim): Shortest commute, best for exhibitors managing a stand. Quiet in the evening.
• City centre (Altstadt, Königsallee): The default for visitors rather than exhibitors. The Altstadt's dense concentration of bars and restaurants makes client dinners easy, and the U-Bahn reaches the fair in about 15–20 minutes.
• Oberkassel, across the Rhine: Quieter and often better value, still a short tram ride from both centre and fair.
• Hotel ships — the local secret: During major fairs, river cruisers moor in the city centre and operate as floating hotels. A genuine alternative when land-based hotels are full, though most require a minimum stay of several nights.

A useful fallback: Cologne is about 40 km away, roughly half an hour by train. When Düsseldorf is full for a major fair, staying there is a practical solution rather than a compromise.

Entry requirements — what changed in 2026

Since 10 April 2026, the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at all Schengen external borders. Non-EU travellers now have fingerprints and a facial image recorded on first entry, replacing passport stamping. The system has produced significant queues at several airports — allow extra time at passport control, particularly on your first trip since the rollout. Subsequent entries are faster once your biometrics are on file.

ETIAS, the pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationalities, has not launched yet. Its target of late 2026 was dropped and it is now expected in 2027. You do not need it today — but check before travelling, since the date has moved repeatedly.

If you require a Schengen visa, apply early: business visa appointments in several countries book out weeks ahead, and major fairs create demand spikes.

Practical notes

Germany's working week is Monday to Friday, and shops close on Sundays — plan purchases accordingly. Cards are accepted almost everywhere now, though a small amount of cash is still useful in older Altstadt pubs.

Düsseldorf hosts one of the largest Japanese business communities in Europe, concentrated around Immermannstraße — which means genuinely good Japanese food, useful if you are hosting Japanese colleagues.

Local etiquette worth knowing: punctuality is taken seriously, and meetings tend to start on time. The regional beer is Altbier, served in small glasses that get replaced automatically until you put your coaster on top of the glass.
