The UK's largest exhibition venue is not in London. It is in Birmingham, and it is nearly twice the size of anything the capital has.

The NEC opened in 1976 and was built on a straightforward premise: put the country's main exhibition centre where the motorway network, the main rail line and an international airport already meet. Half a century later that logic still holds — the NEC is the most physically accessible major venue in the UK, and for shows involving vehicles, machinery or livestock it is the only realistic option.
The venue
The NEC offers over 182,000 m² of exhibition space across 18 halls, plus 32 conference suites, set in 611 acres of grounds with substantial outdoor space. For comparison, London's ExCeL has around 100,000 m² — the NEC is comfortably the largest exhibition space in the country.
Its calendar reflects that scale. Crufts, Autosport International, the British International Motor Show, MODA, the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show and the National Wedding Show all run here, alongside a heavy B2B programme in security, health and safety, manufacturing and hospitality. Events that need to bring vehicles indoors, run demonstrations, or house animals go to the NEC because few other UK venues can take them.
Practical notes on site: free wifi runs throughout the show halls, there are cloakrooms at the main piazza entrances, and banking facilities and ATMs sit near Halls 1 and 4. With 18 halls across a large site, check your hall number before choosing an entrance — the walk between distant halls is real.
Getting there — the NEC's whole point
By train: Birmingham International railway station is a five-minute covered walk from the halls. It sits on the West Coast Main Line with direct services from London Euston in around 70–90 minutes, plus connections from Manchester, Glasgow, Liverpool and across the Midlands. For most UK visitors this is faster and simpler than driving.
By air: Birmingham Airport (BHX) is adjacent to the site, connected to the railway station and the halls by the Air-Rail Link, a free automated shuttle that takes about 90 seconds. Very few exhibition centres anywhere are this close to an international airport — arriving at the NEC from a European city can genuinely mean landing and walking to your stand.
By road: the NEC sits at the junction of the M6, M40 and M42, with over 16,500 parking spaces. This matters because a large share of NEC visitors drive — it is the default for exhibitors bringing equipment, and parking is often free or discounted for specific shows. Check your event's page rather than assuming.
A comparison worth making: if you are flying in from outside the UK and your show is at the NEC, arriving via Birmingham beats Heathrow. Landing at BHX puts you 90 seconds from the venue. Landing at Heathrow puts you a train journey and a cross-London transfer away.
Where to stay
The NEC has an on-site and near-site hotel cluster, which is unusual for a UK venue and genuinely useful given the site's distance from the city centre.
- On-site and NEC campus hotels: Walking distance or a short shuttle from the halls. The practical choice for exhibitors, and they fill first for the largest shows.
- Solihull: A few minutes away, more choice, better value, and a pleasant town rather than an event campus.
- Birmingham city centre: About 12 minutes by train from Birmingham International to Birmingham New Street. This is where the restaurants, bars and evening life are — and the commute is short enough that it costs you little. For visitors rather than exhibitors, this is usually the better arrangement.
- Coventry: Around 15 minutes by train in the other direction, often cheaper again, and a genuine option when the NEC area fills.
The big shows fill the area. Crufts and the motor shows draw enormous crowds and take the nearby rooms well in advance. If your event overlaps one of them, book early or plan on the city centre.
Birmingham beyond the NEC
The city centre has its own venues — the ICC and Utilita Arena among them — used for conferences and mid-sized events rather than large exhibitions. If your event is at one of these rather than the NEC, everything above about transport changes: you want a city-centre hotel and Birmingham New Street, not Birmingham International.
Check which venue your event uses. "Birmingham" on an event listing can mean either the NEC on the eastern edge or a city-centre building, and they are twelve minutes and one train apart.
Entry — the UK changed its rules in 2026
Since 25 February 2026, an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is legally required for visitors of over 80 nationalities travelling to the UK — including nationals of the United States, EU member states, Australia and Canada — unless they already hold a UK visa or other immigration permission.

Carriers verify your permission electronically before boarding, so without a valid ETA you will likely be refused at the gate. Dual nationals holding British citizenship should travel on their British passport rather than applying for an ETA on another.
If your nationality requires a full visitor visa, apply well ahead and ask the organiser for a visa support letter — NEC shows draw international exhibitors and organisers are experienced with this, though some reserve the right to decline in particular cases.
Practical notes
The UK is not in the Schengen area. A Schengen visa does not admit you to the UK, and vice versa — separate systems, separate permissions. Worth checking if you are combining Birmingham with a continental fair.
Currency is the pound sterling. Cards are accepted everywhere and contactless is standard.
Birmingham is Britain's second city and has changed considerably in the past decade. The centre is compact and walkable, with a canal network — the city has more miles of canal than Venice, a fact locals mention often enough that you will hear it. The Jewellery Quarter and the Balti Triangle are both worth an evening if you have one.
Costs are noticeably lower than London — hotels, meals and taxis all run well below capital prices. For a multi-day exhibition, this adds up to a real difference, and is part of why so many large UK shows are held here rather than in the capital.
Season: the NEC runs a dense calendar through spring and autumn, with the winter consumer shows clustering towards Christmas. British weather is mild but wet year-round; the covered walk from the station means you will not need much more than a jacket.
