Southern California hosts a substantial share of America's entertainment, media, apparel, natural products and gaming events — and it spreads them across a metropolitan area the size of a small country. Los Angeles is not a city you navigate casually. Where your venue sits, and where you stay relative to it, matters more here than almost anywhere else in the United States.

Two venues, 30 miles apart

Events listed as "Los Angeles" often are not in Los Angeles at all, and this catches people out.

Anaheim Convention Center is the largest exhibition facility on the West Coast and hosts major shows in natural products, gaming and consumer goods. It sits next to Disneyland, which shapes both the hotel supply and who else is in town.

Check your venue's actual address before booking. A hotel in downtown LA for an Anaheim show means an hour-plus commute each way in Southern California traffic.

Los Angeles Convention Center

The LACC sits in downtown Los Angeles next to Crypto.com Arena, with around 720,000 sq ft of exhibition space across two main halls plus meeting rooms. It hosts anime, gaming, auto and trade events, and the surrounding LA Live district gives it restaurants and hotels within walking distance — unusual for LA, where walkable is rare.

A significant renovation and expansion has been planned for the venue; if you attended before, check the current hall layout rather than relying on memory.

Getting around — the LA reality

Traffic is not a cliché here, it is the central planning constraint. A 15-mile journey can take 25 minutes or 90 depending entirely on the hour. Rush hours run roughly 7–10am and 3–7pm, and Friday afternoons are worse than the rest.

The practical implications:

• Never schedule back-to-back meetings across the city. Two appointments in different districts on the same day means allowing serious buffer, or accepting you will miss one.
• Rideshare is the default — Uber and Lyft are everywhere. Costs add up quickly over a week given the distances.
• A rental car makes sense if your schedule spans multiple locations, though parking downtown is expensive and hotel parking fees are common.
• Metro rail is real and improving, serving downtown, Hollywood, Santa Monica and Long Beach. For a downtown venue with a downtown hotel, you may not need a car at all.

From LAX: the airport is on the west side and downtown is east. Allow 45 minutes at a minimum and considerably more at peak. The LAX/Metro Transit Center connection has improved rail access, but rideshare remains the common choice — note that LAX rideshare pickup is at a designated lot reached by shuttle, not at the terminal kerb.

Consider the smaller airports. John Wayne (SNA) in Orange County is far better placed for Anaheim events. Burbank (BUR) is easier than LAX for anything in the Valley or Hollywood. Both have fewer routes but save real time when they work.

Where to stay

For downtown LA events: The LA Live and South Park area around the Convention Center has a hotel cluster within walking distance — genuinely walkable, which is the exception rather than the rule here. The Financial District and Historic Core are a short ride away with more character and often better value.

For Anaheim events: The hotel supply around the Convention Center and Disneyland is extensive and mostly geared to families, but it is close and functional. Business travellers often prefer Irvine or Costa Mesa, both a short drive with a more corporate feel.

Avoid the temptation of staying at the beach for a downtown event. Santa Monica and Venice are lovely and roughly an hour each way in traffic. If your event is your main purpose, stay near it.

Hotel rates across LA are high but not New York high, and the city's size means supply is deep — a trade show rarely fills the market the way it does in a smaller city.

Entry

Visitors from Visa Waiver Program countries need an ESTA, applied for online at least 72 hours before travel and valid two years, tied to your passport.

Other nationalities need a B-1 business visa requiring an in-person interview, with appointment waits ranging from days to well over a year depending on the country. Start early and ask the organiser for an invitation letter.

LAX is one of the busiest US ports of entry; immigration queues at peak arrival times can be long. Allow extra time if you have an onward domestic connection.

Weather and timing

Southern California's climate is the reason the events calendar runs year-round. Winters are mild — daytime temperatures typically 15–20°C — and rain is concentrated in a short winter season. There is no snow disruption, no summer shutdown.

Two things visitors underestimate. Evenings cool sharply, particularly near the coast, so a jacket is worth having even in summer. And June gloom is real — coastal fog can keep early summer mornings grey and cool, which surprises people expecting constant sunshine.

Wildfire season, roughly late summer into autumn, occasionally affects air quality. It rarely disrupts events but is worth checking if you have respiratory sensitivities.

Practical notes

Sales tax in Los Angeles County is around 9.5%, added at the till.

Tipping is 18–20% in restaurants, standard for rideshare, and expected for hotel staff.

Business culture is more relaxed than New York — meetings start a few minutes late without comment, dress is noticeably more casual, and relationship-building tends to precede business rather than follow it. In entertainment-adjacent sectors particularly, a coffee meeting is a real meeting.

Breakfast meetings are common because they avoid traffic. An 8am coffee is often easier for everyone than an 11am office visit.

The city rewards a spare day more than most trade fair destinations — the coast, the mountains and the desert are all within a couple of hours, and the museums are excellent. But plan it as a separate day rather than something to fit around sessions; the distances do not allow improvisation.
