Jeddah Trade Fairs & Business Events — Visitor Guide

Jeddah is Saudi Arabia's Red Sea port and its commercial gateway — historically the arrival point for pilgrims heading to Makkah, and today a trading city with a smaller but distinct events calendar alongside Riyadh.

The city's defining event category is one that barely exists anywhere else: the Hajj and Umrah sector. The annual Hajj Conference and Exhibition draws participants from over 90 countries and visitor numbers in the hundreds of thousands, covering pilgrimage logistics, technology and hospitality services. If your business touches that industry, Jeddah is where it convenes.

The venues

Jeddah Superdome, opened in 2021, is the world's largest freestanding geodesic dome — around 210 metres across, 46 metres high, with a column-free covered area of roughly 35,000–40,000 m² and capacity for up to about 40,000 people depending on layout. Being column-free at that scale makes it unusually flexible for large exhibitions and conferences. There are over 5,000 parking spaces.

Jeddah International Exhibition & Convention Centre is the smaller of the two, at around 40,000 m² total with about 10,000 m² of indoor event space, used for more focused trade shows.

Both sit north of central Jeddah, close to the airport.

Getting there

Jeddah's biggest practical advantage is its airport transfer. King Abdulaziz International Airport is roughly 7 km from the main venues — typically 10 to 15 minutes by taxi or ride-hail. That is among the shortest transfers of any Gulf exhibition city, and considerably shorter than Riyadh's 35 km.

There is no urban metro. Taxis and ride-hailing are the practical option — Uber, Careem, Jeeny and Bolt all operate. From central Jeddah hotels to the venues takes about 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.

The Haramain High-Speed Railway is the city's distinctive rail asset, running at up to 300 km/h and connecting Madinah, Jeddah city station, the airport, King Abdullah Economic City and Makkah. If you are arriving from Makkah or Madinah, this is fast and comfortable, and the airport station links directly to onward transport. Book ahead during busy event periods.

One thing to plan around: there is no direct rail service between Jeddah and Riyadh. The two cities are connected by air, with a flight of around two hours. If your trip covers both, budget for that rather than assuming a train.

Where to stay

The venues sit north near the airport, while the hotels, restaurants and evening life concentrate along the Corniche and in the city centre. A 20–30 minute transfer each way is normal.

Staying central is usually the better trade-off here. The Red Sea waterfront is genuinely pleasant, and there is more around you than at the venue end of the city. Hotels near the airport work if your schedule is tight and you are flying straight out.

If you have a free afternoon, Al-Balad — historic Jeddah, a UNESCO World Heritage site — is the one thing worth making time for. Its coral-stone merchant houses are unlike anything else in the Gulf, and restoration work has made the district far more accessible in recent years.

Visas

Entry rules are the same across Saudi Arabia, and they are more involved than in the United Arab Emirates.

Attending as a visitor generally works on a tourist eVisa, available online to eligible nationalities. The detail most people miss: it allows 90 days in total across a 365-day period, not 90 days per visit, and it cannot be extended.

If you are exhibiting or meeting clients, you need a Business Visit Visa, which cannot be applied for independently — a Saudi host company must first generate an invitation through the MOFA portal. Allow several days for the invitation and several more for processing.

Practical notes

The working week runs Sunday to Thursday, with Friday and Saturday as the weekend — different from the United Arab Emirates, which moved to Monday-to-Friday in 2022.

Jeddah is more humid than Riyadh. Being on the coast, it trades the capital's dry heat for humidity, which makes the summer months harder rather than easier. Exhibition season runs roughly October through April here as well.

Ramadan and the Hajj season both affect the city considerably. Jeddah is the entry point for millions of pilgrims, and during Hajj the airport, hotels and roads operate under exceptional load. Check your dates against both — this matters more in Jeddah than anywhere else in the Kingdom.

Cards are widely accepted. English is used in business, though less universally than in the UAE.
